The History of the Jones Funeral Home
Jones Funeral Through the Years
It is unknown when the original funeral home was founded and by whom, but we do know that it was owned and managed by one Harold McClure, who operated his funeral home from a location on Georgetown’s Main Street.
It was not unusual at the time for a funeral to be in a family’s residence, where the casket would be set up in the living room for visitation and funeral services. Harold eventually purchased and renovated a larger home at 34 Edith Street as a dedicated site to host funeral services and to allow him to sell home furnishings from the same location.
We can only assume that Mr. McClure was a passionate funeral director who, like those who followed in his footsteps, dedicated his life to serving the community at their time of loss for many years.
1950s – 1980s – Jim Jones started working for Harold in 1954 as a funeral director. In 1955, they changed the business’s name to McClure-Jones Funeral Home, launching the next generation of this Georgetown institution. Jim’s son, Phil, became a funeral director in 1973 and started working at McClure-Jones at that time. A year later, Jim and his wife Noreen purchased the business from Harold’s estate on his passing.
In the mid-seventies, the Georgetown community was experiencing significant growth. Jim and Noreen knew they would need to expand to meet the demand and purchased a 2.8-acre lot in 1979, a corner lot severed from what was originally the John Brown Devereaux farm, breaking ground on a brand-new funeral home, which would become its permanent home.

In 1983, the business name became J.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, and three years later, they relocated to their new location on Trafalgar Rd. The new building was considerably larger, with 8,000 square feet of accessible space and more parking to accommodate their growing business.
1989 – 2000 – Phil and his wife, Marg, purchased the business from his parents in 1989 and hired licensed funeral director Rob Blackburn. Toby Chisholm came on board as a funeral director intern in 1990 and received his funeral director’s license in 1991. Rob and Toby would become integral to the day-to-day running of the business and in seeing the business’ growth into the millennium.
In 1995, construction was completed on a 2,000-square-foot addition housing a new family centre, The Trafalgar Room. With this expansion, J.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home could accommodate funeral receptions ensuring Georgetown families greater convenience and more tailored services in their time of need.
