Loss from a Child’s Perspective

Children experience loss differently than adults. While their understanding of death evolves with age and development, the emotions they feel – sadness, confusion, fear, or even guilt – are no less real or intense.

A child may not always have the words to express their grief, but their behaviours often speak volumes. They may ask repeated questions, act out, withdraw, or show signs of regression like bedwetting or clinginess.

It’s important to remember that children often process grief in small pieces. They may seem fine one moment and devastated the next. Their grief may resurface weeks, months or even years later, especially during milestones like birthdays, holidays, or even graduations.

Supporting a grieving child begins with honesty and presence. Use clear, age-appropriate language helps them feel safe and included. Avoiding euphemisms like “gone to sleep” or “passed away” can prevent confusion.

Encouraging open conversations and letting them see your own sadness can help normalize their feelings. Most importantly, children need reassurance that they are loved, that their emotions are valid, and that they are not alone in how they are feeling.

Whether through a trusted adult, a counselor, or support groups for young grievers, providing them with space to grieve – and the tools to cope – can help them begin to heal.
